MUKW Will Replace Cyprus MEU Documents

Updated: Feb 24, 2023

It's time to change your MEU documents to the new MUKW card!

The Civil Registry and Migration Department in Cyprus announced on 5 August 2021 that old types of identity documents (MEUs), which do not bear an expiration date, will cease to be valid on 3 August 2026.

This means that anyone holding ID cards that expire (UK or EU citizen) have been requested to change their residency documents to the new biometric cards before 3 August 2026 at the latest. This has been made mandatory as a result of EU regulation 2019/1157 of the European Parliament and of the Council on 20 June 2019 on strengthening the security of identity cards of Union citizens and of residence documents issued to Union citizens and their family members exercising their right of free movement.

This goes hand in hand with the UK government's guidelines that recommend you change to the new MUKW cards, as this document will declare your rights under the Withdrawal Agreement and will simplify administrative processes as well as border crossings.

Unlike the MEU documents, the MUKW is a physical laminated card that holds your biometrics. It is quite a simple procedure to change your MEU document to the new MUKW card. As it stands currently, you must book your immigration appointment online, however very few appointments are showing.
